Gunung Stong's Residents

Back in 2002, I joined a mountain climbing expedition up Gunung Stong, Kelantan with 2 others friends (Zack & Lee) together with an experience local guide. Gunung Stong, for those who love mountain trekking and with the ‘third’ eye ability, will know that this particular mountain is infamously known as an asylum for ghosts and spirits, with regular sightings reported by many hikers. Prior to my virgin climb up Stong, I had not heard of any stories about the ghost or spirits that exists there.

After our continuous and energy-sapping hike up, we arrived at Baha camp site near the Stong Waterfalls to put up for a night before continuing up Gunung Stong the following day. Nearby the camp was a pool called Kolam Tuan Puteri (Princess Pool). Instinctively I got down to my shorts and jumped in to enjoy a refreshing dip. Zack & Lee joined me shortly afterwards.

We were having an enjoyable time splashing each other and fooling around until suddenly, that is when I saw it.

It was white apparition standing near the edge of the pool. I seems like it was observing and staring at us. I called out to Zack & Lee and pointed at it. Instantly, Zack hit my hand and scolded ‘Don’t point!’ At that instant, I felt a bit feverish and the apparition seemed to have disappeared. Zack & Lee feared that we might offend it as we were making a lot of noises and invading its territory.

Not feeling very comfortable, we decided to make my way back to camp, it was then I could see more and more of them all over the place!... They were ghostly apparitions, around 5-6 of them… They do not have a scary monstrous faces, but they merely appeared in a hollow, murky image. Some stood behind trees and some on the branches. There were green & white apparitions, the green ones looked more frightening than the white ones. A flowery jasmine-like scent floated in the air all of a sudden.

Even when I returned with Zack, Lee and, our guide back to our camp, the yun hei (people’s energy) was not enough; ‘they’ were still lurking around. I quickly went into the tent, dried myself up, got into my sleeping bag and zip up and hide. Even when I heard someone outside asking me whether I was OK, I kept quiet as I fear that it may not have been my friend.

The next morning I felt better, but I did not talked too much about the apparitions until we had completed our climb and returned back to base. It was then I told our guide what I saw and smelled, our guide, who turns out to be a part-time medium explained that the Stong area had many spooky sightings because businessmen use bomohs to rear spirits and the area was a kind of “storehouse” for those spirits. He personally had seen several of them almost every time he went up the mountain and had gotten used to it. This explains why he only switched on his torch occasionally during the previous day's night fall as he said “If somebody comes to your house, would you be happy if he constantly shone a light everywhere?”

So be more respectful when you do trek in jungles or go hiking up mountains. However, if you believe in spirits, they can probably get to you anywhere, anytime, not just only in the jungles.

Granted Wish From Mulu

This is a true story told to us by a tour guide (James) about 10 years back when we went on a family outing to Mulu National Park near Miri, Sarawak. Before that, my parents had already read of the tragic story in a particular Chinese newspaper, but the story was told in more detail by James who was, at that time, the tour guide for that particular fated group of people. I had tried searching for related news on the InterNet but couldn’t find any stories.

A group of around 15 chinese friends and relatives had gone on an adventurous trip to Mulu National Park, Sarawak which is one of the largest tropical rainforest national parks on Borneo Island. The 1st day started with all of them in high spirits; after all it was supposed to be a relaxing nature trip for them. James had earlier warned them during a pre-briefing to keep their voices down to a minimum as it may offend jungle spirits; however being non superstitious, the group who were close friends tend to make fun of each other and tell dirty jokes, hence frequently howling out in laughter and made funny noises as they enjoy a wonderful time.

On the 2nd day, James brought the group for a jungle trekking expedition. The group was amazed at the beauty of the nature rainforest and gentle flowing streams close by as they track along a relaxing trail. Suddenly out of the blue, someone exclaim 'WOW! What a beautiful place this is, how I wish I can stay here forever.’ A few friends quickly supported the statement and some even said that they wish to stay in this peaceful place everlastingly etc. James knew this as they also jokingly asked him if he had any houses for them to stay. The enjoyable day turn into night and soon it was dinner and time for James to brief the group on the next day’s activities. During the briefing, James had mysteriously sensed that the group was not as attentive and as excited as they had been the previous day; dirty jokes and humorous stories were missing. James thought it might had been the long day that they had trekking in the jungle.

On the 3rd and final day of the trip, James brought the group for scenary picnic trip at a pond beneath a waterfall. On the way there, the group was eerily quiet; it was a big contrast to the bubbly and noisy group the previous day. James brush of a weird feeling thinking they must have been worn-out from the 2 previous days activities. Upon reaching the edge of the crystal clear pond beside the waterfall, the group unpacked and had some food to eat while enjoy the scene. All of a sudden, James heard a snapping sound from the trees above, he looked up and horrifically saw a large tree crashing down upon them. There was literally no time to react; James quickly pushed a lady aside into the pond beside him and jump into the pond himself. The tree had narrowly missed him.

The whole event happened too fast; James had feared the worst. The fallen tree, measuring around 2 meters in diameter and several meters height had killed 6 people and critically injured a few other members. The scene was chaotic and gory, there were blood splatter everywhere; James saw a head being completely crushed by the tree with its brain spluttering out like a squash tomato, a lifeless torso was held down by the heavy tree, blood was everywhere, people were screaming in horror. A helicopter was instantly called in to transport the injured and the mentally shocked to the nearest hospital for treatment. Newspaper reports had held back many details of the incident.

Till today, no one knows exactly what happens. There were no lightning that had caused the tree to fall, no tree cutting are allowed in the rainforest. Incidentally, James remembered the few dead members... they were those who had remarked / joked that they wanted to stay in the beautiful rainforest forever. Why did the few dead people behaved strangely the day before, did they know that their death is near and imminent? Did they sensed something coming for them? James believed that it was jungle spirits who had ‘granted their request' by keeping their soul forever in the jungle. James happened to bring us to the place of the incident during our visit 1 year after it happened. Standing at the edge of pond beneath the waterfall, it is difficult to imagined that such a sinister event had happened in a place so serene, beautiful and calm...

Mysterious Figure

This is a personal story during my younger days in Brunei Darussalam, till today I still can picture the grotesque image in my head.

I used to study in a chinese school back in the early to mid 1990s. Those days were some of the most memorable days of my life. My friends and I were always on the hunt for rubber seeds, fighting spiders and even looking for 'jewels'... We would go into a small jungle clearing behind our school that was rumour to be an old burial ground for those who died during the Japanese Occupation and those 'jewels' are being buried there, although we never did find anything. It was during one of these searches that ended our hobbies of being treasure hunters.

On one particular humid afternoon after lunch, me and two of my best friends, Jim & Gary, decided to go hunting behind our school. My purpose was to collect rubber seeds to play with the other kids in school as sometimes we would compete with each other to see who has the strongest seeds. Jim & Gary's mission 'impossible' was to look for those 'jewels'.

While on the way into the jungle clearing which we are ever so familiar with, I begin focusing on ripe rubber seeds that had fallen onto the ground, if any of you knows about collecting rubber seeds, when the seeds are ripe, you will hear a small explosive sound when the rubber seed covering burst open releasing the seeds. Being a choosy rubber seed picker, I was selecting those good rubber seeds, don't ask me how I know that the seeds are good, I just know. Jim & Gary are ahead of me making their way towards the clearing. They were roughly just 50m ahead.

All of sudden, while I was busy filling my pockets with rubber seeds, I heard a loud snap on my right above me, it was not like the normal rubber seed covering bursting open kind of sound, it was more like a branch being broken. Naturally, I turn my gaze toward the direction of the sound. To my horror, I saw a dark figure perched on top of the tree branch staring at me. There were those dark red, evil eyes and slightly blurred figure, the head was tilted towards one side. It wasn't laughing nor crying, just staring...This was enough to send instant shivers down my spine and my hairs were all standing at their ends. I scream at it and called out for Jim & Gary... Now comes the bizarre part...

Jim came running towards my direction but Gary was nowhere to be seen. I pointed at the direction of the figure and I don't know if Jim saw it, but sensing the fear in my panicky face was enough to scare the crap out of him. But where is Gary? We ran off in search of Gary, not knowing if the Thing was following behind us. We finally found Gary squatting down against a tree clutching his right hand a few metres down the path. We quickly grab him and made it out of the jungle clearing as fast as we could.

Back at school, Gary was in a daze. We queried him where he was when we called out to him and what was wrong with his arm. Gary claimed that he heard nothing and instead called back to us during the time he got 'bitten'. We inspected his arm and to our horror we saw 2 bite holes on his arm about 1 inch in separation, it was like a dracula bite. His arm was swollen but not bleeding. Jim and I looked at each other with fear in our eyes and that was my confirmation that Jim had saw the evil figure as well.

We instantly notified our school teachers and rushed him to the nearest clinic for treatment. We received a good lecturing from our teachers for wondering recklessly into unknown places; Gary received treatment and was having high fever the next day but recovered a few days later. Doctor says that a poisonous insect had bitten him and cause the swelling, but me and Jim knew that no insect would have fangs as wide as that, even if there was, the insect should be big, however Gary claims he did not see any insect during the time he was bitten... And why didn't he hear us call out his name loudly, we were virtually screaming at the top of our lungs!

That was the last treasure hunting expedition for us. After the incident, some of our 'hero' friends still continue going into the jungle clearing and although nothing happened to them, we are not taking our chances anymore...

Genting Highlands - Borned Spirits

Gentings Highlands, one of the most popular tourist locations in Malaysia. Located in the state of Pahang and resting at 2,000m above sea level, it offers a cool respite from Malaysia's bustling capital city. Many people head for Genting Highlands specifically for its nightlife at the renowed world-class Casino de Genting.

With all the excitement and happenings going around, one definitely will not know about the evil sinister that lurks within the place. The following story was told by a friend whose uncle used to work in Genting as a building maintenance worker.

Several years ago, before the opening of the casino and hotels in Genting Highlands was opened to the public, ten pregnant Vietnamese ladies were being brought to Genting Highlands to stay in a particular hotel. Witness confirmed that the pregnant ladies are roughly about 7-8 months pregnant and their bulging tummy are clearly visible. Each of them checked into different rooms and alternately switched into different rooms after some time. All housekeeping and food were being taken care discretely only by one Vietnamese man who had came with them and strictly no one else was allowed to witness or interfere with their activities.

A month later, the ten 'pregnant' ladies checked out of their respective rooms. Astonishingly, when they checked out, all the Vietnamese ladies look very slim and beautiful and none of them were carrying any babies. If was as if they were never pregnant before. In all the rooms that the ladies had stayed before, there was a special wind chime hanging at the window.

A few months later after the opening of the casino, a young man committed suicide in one of the rooms where a wind chime was placed. He had lost all his savings and company's money at the casino. Subsequently, after the suicide, many hotel staff and patrons had heard the sound of a child crying and seen a figure of a young man angrily running after a young child.

The workers were then told that the wind chimes are actually 'toys' for the ghost child that the Vietnames ladies had given birth to. These ghost child (toyol, gwei zhai) are child spirits that roam the hotels to 'invite' people staying there to visit the casino and gamble. It was rumoured that the man was one of the victims that was being persuaded by the child spirit to gamble his life savings away. His spirit cannot rest in peace and wants to take revenge on the ghost child.

The wind chimes were subsequently removed by the management after that. However, do becareful when you happen to check into a Genting hotel, who knows there may be some wind chimes that had been left out and not yet remove.....

Restless @ F15

A girl friend of mine forwarded me 2 pictures that was taken by her friend last few weeks. The picture was taken in Midvalley shopping complex; one of the most happening shopping centres in KL. You can see on the right side background that there is a picture of a white girl standing at Pillar F15 (click picture for a larger view).

Several reports and comments from the internet had indicated that the pictures are fake. Fake reports includes the 'ghost' casted a shadow; the 'ghost' cannot exist under lights, the 'ghost' looks too 'solid' etc. While some people believed that it is real and some even tried examining it under Photo Shop and could not find any 'con job', some believe that it is really a ghost.

There was even a story told by the security guards that a few years back, a car knocked down a girl at fast speed in the shopping mall late at night when there were not much cars around. The girl was playing with the trolley at the centre of the parking driveway while the parents were loading accessories into their car near column F15. It was a hit and run incident. And since then, several sightings of a girls playing around the area had been spotted. Could this be the spirit of the girl?

Be it real or a hoax. Please be respectful when you happen to be parking at the basement of MidValley shopping complex........
